What is ASA Capped PVC Decking
ASA capped PVC decking is an outdoor board made of two materials in one extrusion: a foamed PVC core, and an ASA cap layer co-extruded over it. The core carries the structure and the screw hold. The cap carries the colour and takes the UV load. HOHEcotech forms both layers in the same die, so there is no glue line that can open up later.
- 01
PVC cellular core
Foamed polyvinyl chloride with no wood fibre in the mix. Water absorption stays low, and the section does not swell or rot when it stays wet.
- 02
ASA cap layer
An acrylic-styrene-acrylonitrile skin co-extruded over the core. It carries the woodgrain pattern and the pigment, and absorbs UV before it reaches the core.
- 03
Co-extruded interface
Cap and core are formed in one pass, so the bond is continuous across the face and the edges of every HOHEcotech board.
Why it holds up outdoors
Six properties that decide whether a HOHEcotech deck still looks right after five summers, not six months.
Weather resistance
Made for permanent exterior use: sun, rain, salt air and repeated wet-dry cycles. No protective coating to reapply.
Colour stability
The ASA cap absorbs UV before it reaches the core, which is where most surface fading and greying begins.
Low water absorption
No wood fibre means no food source for moisture. Nothing in the board swells, delaminates or supports rot.
Surface hardness
The ASA skin resists scratching and impact better than a PE-capped WPC surface, which keeps the grain readable.
Maintenance
No painting, no oiling, no biocide treatment. Soap, water and a soft brush handle almost everything.
Predictable movement
Thermal movement is designed at roughly 0.2%. That is a number to build gaps around, not a reason to over-clamp boards.
How it goes down
PVC behaves differently from WPC on site. Almost every failure we are called about on a HOHEcotech deck traces back to one of these five points.
- 01
Acclimatise the boards
Unpack and lay flat on site for at least 24 hours before cutting, so board temperature matches the environment.
- 02
Build a ventilated frame
Joists at 300 mm centres or tighter, at least 30 mm above ground. Never lay boards directly on concrete, membrane or soil.
- 03
Set the gaps first
5–8 mm at board edges, 8–10 mm at butt joints, 10 mm or more against walls and posts. Upper limit in winter, lower in summer.
- 04
Fix with hidden clips
Pre-drill, seat the clip, tighten without locking the board down. 304 stainless steel as standard, 316 for coastal sites.
- 05
Close the details
Double joists under every butt joint, fascia at edges, 45° mitre at corners. Overhang past the last joist stays under 30 mm.
PVC + ASA against WPC + PE
Both are legitimate specifications. The honest difference is what each one costs you in weight, moisture and movement.
| Aspect | ASA capped PVC | WPC + PE capped |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | About 60% of the density, lighter to ship and handle | Heavier per board, higher freight cost |
| Moisture | No wood fibre, low absorption, will not rot | Around 60% wood fibre, swells and can crack under long wet exposure |
| Thermal movement | Higher, needs designed expansion gaps | Lower movement, more forgiving on long runs |
| Surface | Hard ASA skin, resists scratching and impact | Softer PE skin, marks and scuffs more easily |
| Colour retention | Pigment sits in the cap that takes the UV load | Good, but colour sits closer to the core |
| Fire behaviour | PVC core is hard to ignite, flame-retardant ASA available | Wood and PE content burns unless modified |
| Stiffness under load | Deflects more, needs closer joists | Higher modulus, less deflection on the same span |
| Cost | Higher material cost | Lower material cost |
Where budget and stiffness dominate, WPC + PE remains the cheaper specification. Where weight, moisture and colour retention dominate, PVC + ASA is the stronger one. HOHEcotech produces the ASA capped PVC side, and we would rather point out where WPC still wins than oversell our own material.
Where it gets used
Decking, cladding and wet areas, in residential and commercial work.
Residential decks and terraces
Balconies, roof terraces and garden decks where repainting is not an option for the owner.
Commercial and hospitality
Pool surrounds, hotel terraces and public areas built to 250 mm joist centres.
Ventilated wall cladding
Facade and soffit cladding on a drained, ventilated batten system.

Colour that lives in the cap layer
At HOHEcotech the tone is produced in the ASA cap, not printed on top of the board. That is why the surface keeps its grain direction and colour under abrasion instead of wearing through to a pale layer underneath.
- Woodgrain tones across the range, from pale ash to dark walnut
- Custom colours and brushed or embossed surfaces on qualified orders
- Matching trims, fascia and clips supplied with the boards
- Sample boards and a physical colour card sent free of charge
Questions buyers actually ask
Will PVC not become brittle outdoors?
HOHEcotech builds ASA capped PVC specifically for exterior use. The PVC core carries the structure, the ASA cap handles weather and colour. Final performance depends on formulation, production control and correct installation, which is why we publish the installation rules instead of promising a lifespan.
Can you guarantee 20 years without fading?
No outdoor material is fade-free over decades. Our intention is excellent colour stability and long service under normal conditions. Actual results depend on exposure, environment and installation quality, and we would rather state that plainly than sell a number.
How is quality controlled?
Raw material control, in-process inspection and a final check before packing, on every HOHEcotech board. Test reports are available on request and third-party inspection before shipment is welcome.
Can colours, lengths and packaging be customised?
Yes. OEM and ODM work is supported. Feasibility depends on the technical requirement, order quantity and production schedule, so send the specification and we will confirm against both.
